Stormy weather

We are in the midst of a heatwave. It's no lovely, warm summery thing - it's an apocalyptic nightmare of bushfires and heat stroke and extreme weather warnings. Such fun.

The only possible thing to do in a time like this is to go op shopping. Virginia and I had a lovely day - we both picked up some delightful treasures...

Some lovely vintage china, another vintage camera and case for my collection and a fabularse 1970s leather coat. A heat wave is the perfect time to buy winter coats - they are super cheap! Also picked up a couple of vintage frocks, which are currently in the wash as they reeeeek of moth balls.

My favourite treasure of the day, however...

Is this DIVINE red velvet sofa in exquisite condition. Virginia and I both fell madly in love with it, naturally. I have no idea of the age - any suggestions? It has lovely heavy casters and the cushions are very solid and heavy (horse hair?).

The darling op shop man piped up that he thought the sofa had been donated by a local brothel. Of course, that only made me want it more. So now it's mine.

Kitchy kitchy ya ya da da!

I can promise that there will be many ridiculous photo shoots on that old whore of a sofa.

And speaking of old whores...

Here's me faffing about in the storm water drain in my new 1970s gingham sqaure dancing dress. Normal.

I wore:
Dress - Vintage store sale
Cardigan, petticoat, bangles, belt, sunnies - Op shopped
Shoes and flower - Retail
Hair bow - handmade by my darling Helgita Burrita

Stay kool and the gang.

That couch is SO awesome - it reminds me of something you'd see in some kind of weird dream sequence in Twin Peaks or something similar. I really need to wear my vintage square dancing frock more - they are just the best xoxo

Omg, Sarah, it's absolutely gorg. I saw a sofa almost exactly like that across the street from mine on the curb in Toronto. I snapped a pic of it, went for a coffee with a pal and somehow planned to haul it back to my apartment upon my return. Of course, a few hours later and it was gone. :( (I featured it on my blog, wistfully). Will you show us how it looks in your place? I think it's probably 1960s or 70s.
Hope the heat wave abates. Xoxo

Sight for sore eyes or wot! I do love that frock yer frolicking about in on your new whorehouse sofa. No, you couldn't not get it after hearing that can you? I used to have one that came out of an old Irish pub.It smelled a bit, but I kept finding drunks money in it for years. That one is a proper beaut.
The weather over there has made it to our news here..you stay safe, y'hear.

I am not jealous if your heat wave but I am so jealous of that fabularse sofa. What a find! It wouldn't bother me that it had been in a brothel but I reckon I'd make sure it had a deep clean first!! The leather trench is fab too. I've been looking for one just like it. Looks like you had an amazing thrifting experience xxx

I was listening to reports of the horrible heatwave in Australia on the radio today - sounded terrifying. Hope you are managing OK. Op shopping and faffing about seem perfect ways to deal with the extreme weather, especially if you are going to find a Lady Marmalade-ish sofa to frolic on. No idea about age, when did they stop using horse hair to stuff upholstery? 1940-50s? Anyway, I am looking forward to many a photo shoot on that beauty. Whore's drawers optional.
And as though that weren't enough fabularsity, there you are in gingham, looking flouncy and cute and naughty and twirly. Exquisite, my darling!
Love you even more than those turquoise sandals. And I love them A LOT! xxxxxxxxx

The hot weather is horrid isn't it?! Summer is never over quickly enough for my liking. ;)

I love the print of the dress you're wearing on the couch. The couch is pretty fabulous too!

That sofa is just too awesome for words! At one of the local antique store, they were selling this massive floor lamp from a local bordello. The hubby and I liked it but it was like $500. Maybe some day we'll be able to buy something like that.

The sofa is just the cherry on top of your New Year! *hehe*
I love your gingham dress. You look totally awesome and gorgeous.

you should do a seapunk photo shoot - did you read Sacramento's post? Love all that blue and green together! In fact, I'm making a request that you do it very soon. And obviously I love that sofa, perhaps it's 40s? From a 40s brothel? How fantastic, so pleased you bought it. Your other buys look fabularse too, check out that coat! Keep being a rock star!! xxxxxxx

Dina@VintageAdvantage said...

That sofa is so amazing!! The fact that it may have come from a brothel def. makes it even more so...
I'm agreeing with Lucy here though...needs a steam or something!
PS Sorry about your hideous heatwave! Say safe & cool!

fantastic couch! You all are roasting and we here are freezing our ---s off. What a funny world.

Looks like you're causing the heat wave! Voulez-vous couch-ez and all that. I love the dress you have on on the sofa, but you do give gingham a whole new dimension. Love it!

CityScape Skybaby said...

Ooh we used to have a sofa like that! My college tutor gave it to us though, it didn't come from a brothel, so I doubt it had as exciting a history as yours, though who knows what college tutors get up to. I've seen reports on TV about bush fires in Australia so I hope all you blogging ladies are okay over there. And thank you for your lovely message Sarah, I was just busy, then I was ill then I was suffering from miserable cow disease for a bit. But my sister in law dragged me and the kids out yesterday and made me enjoy myself then I came back home to your sweet thoughtful message and I'm feeling happier again after my blip. xx

You're looking awfully sexay in the storm drain. In those BLUE SHOES! and square dance dress.
Your sofa is like furniture out of a dream. You were born to recline and artfully pose on it. Wow!!! Will it inspire a poem?

What a gorgeous piece of furniture!
Good that you got it, i would have too !
Too good to pass, was it expensive?

Now your outfit, the mix colors, textures is wonderful another fav of mine!

Yup, when all fails, go thifting.

LOVE the short, gingham dress over the longer petticoat; genius! And the shoes and the nail? Awesomeness!

I've had several red sofas and for me, that's the only color for them really. I'd say your sofa, given the style and inner construction you mentioned, appears to be from the 60s. Chesterfield style was popular then.

That sofa is sultry like you and I'm sure if it could talk we would all be shocked at the stories it holds! I love the graffiti background to your adorable style. Those shoes, I want them in every color :)
