Sometimes I think I'm 15 again

in 1985... and it's pretty fun!

So we all know about my obsession with overalls and my penchant for ridiculous 1980s outfits.

I have two items that I have owned since the 1980s.

One of them is my pleather skirt.

The other is this bizarre overalls/apron/pinafore/dress/thingy.

Overalls and bizarre apron/pinafore/dress/thingies were made popular in the mid 80s
by bands such as Dexy's Midnight Runners and Australian band Big Pig.
I saved up for ages to buy this in 1985 and I've lugged it around for the last 26 years (!!!) as I love it so very very much. I wear it infrequently, but it's especially perfect in winter as it's so enormous and shapeless that I can wear forty-seven layers underneath if I like. And I like.

It's basically just a big sack that you step into, wrap it around and tie - you can tie it in the front or the back: I prefer to tie it in the back so that I can use the pockets. I love pockets.

I wore:
Overalls/apron/pinafore/dress/thingy - Retail (in 1985)
Long sleeved tshirt, striped socks, tights and beret - Retail (more recently)
Coat, scarf and bangles - Op shopped
Boots - Made just for me by Vegan Wares in Melbourne about ten years ago (they still look like new)
Sunnies - Gift from beautiful Ofelia

Speaking of Ofelia, have a look at this amazing parcel of gorgeousness that she just sent me:

I know! I'm so spoiled!

Four scarves, a fab yellow (taxi) checked belt, two pairs of sunnies (including the red ones I'm wearing in these pics!), two bags, three nail polishes and The Full Monty dvd!
Thank you so much Ofelia, you are an absolute darling!

And I've had a little op shopping fortune recently...
here's a little teaser...

Ridiculous.

Awesomesauce.

Ofelia's parcel is magnificent. The dance in the dole queue in the Full Monty is one of the best.things.ever.
Love that apron-y thingy and those boots, and I have no words for that divine hat.
Kevin Rowland prefers dresses to dungarees these days. xxx

Dear Sarah,
as a fellow 80s enthusiast I love all these outfits.
Even though I was only eleven back in 1985 I was already well into clothes & having two older sisters was definitely a bonus, as I could go wild in their wardrobes too.
I like the 80s cause unlike the dull arse preppy style GAP that was the 90s (if you don’t include some of the fringe fashion indie/grunge/kinderwhore styles) fashion in the 80s was a whole lot more ostentatious and as such fabulous!
Your OP-shop haul looks very exciting indeed, can’t wait to see it.
Lot’s of love

The 80's were so much fun and I loved the fashion!! Some favorites were florescent colors, my super pegged Levi's that I could barely pull over my feet and all my cropped t-shirts.

You look so warm and cozy and I love the splashes of color!

Just gorgeous! I do love the big apron/beret combo. I liked it during my student days set off with a pair of DM's. Lush!

I agree with Vix, those little hints of vintage fabrics look wonderfully intriguing!
You do suit the whole 80s thing, Sarah - but then I think you can "do" most eras, such is the chutzpah!
I particularly like the "How to put on the apron/pinafore/thingy" photos - ever thought of a career demonstrating on a shopping channel? "You tie the strings just like SO..."
And the red hat is delicious!

I too was 15 in 1985 but there is no way one of my skirts from then would fit me now. I salute you! x

No wonder you have lugged that pinafore around for so long - it freakin' rocks! I am also quite fond of your scarf & beret.

I agree with Vix! What a tease you are, showing us those little snippets of all your op-shopping goodies. I can't wait to see them all properly!

Isn't opening packages fun?! I'm admiring that wrap/jumper/skirt thingy!

You are so cool! Nice poses. The pinafore is amazing, why don't we have things like that today? The only thing similar that I can think of is those shapeless hippy fisherman pants. I have a pair in light purple. No-where near as cool as the pinafore!

You simply MUST show us more than a little snippet of your recent finds! XOxoxox

yes, one of the really nice things with overalls and your nice loose overall thingy, is that you can breathe all the way and rund and jump and play, and to have something like that in 26 years, then it becomes great to get older ! overall xx Niels
